They investigate obtaining pectin from the peel of the passion fruit

Pectin is found naturally in fruits and is very relevant in the industry, both at a food and pharmaceutical level.

The State Research Center Foundation for Agroindustrial Experimental Production (Ciepe) is working on a project to obtain pectin from the peel of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims), with the aim of giving it added value and reducing its import.

The information was shared by Ciepe through a video published on its social networks, says a note of the Ministry of Popular Power for Science and Technology.

According to engineer Mabeth Caro, “we are currently carrying out research to obtain pectin from passion fruit peel, a byproduct generated by agribusiness.”

"It is an additive used by the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry and at this time the country is not producing this additive, which is of great importance," he said.

Caro, who is part of the Fruits and Vegetables Division of the Ciepe Foundation, specified that they are doing “experimental tests at the laboratory level, to obtain the technology necessary” that generates the obtaining of the fiber.

According to the foundation, pectin is found naturally in fruits and is very relevant in the industry, both at a food and pharmaceutical level.
