Scientists evaluate the potential of microalgae

They work on the use of microalgae for energy generation

The Institute for Advanced Studies Foundation (IDEA) is currently the epicenter of a series of research around the biotechnological potential of microalgae, with the aim of providing solutions to various problems; among them energy generation, reported the Ministry of Science and Technology via X.

Those in charge of carrying out these studies are Venezuelan scientists. On the other hand, microalgae are unicellular and photosynthetic microorganisms that can measure between two and 200 micrometers. Their reproduction can be sexual and asexual, mainly by binary fission or mitosis, and they are widely distributed in the biosphere. They have the ability to fix carbon dioxide. of carbon (CO2) from the atmosphere to produce biomass through photosynthesis.

These microorganisms are vital for the ecology, since they contain various reserve substances inside, such as lipids, carbohydrates and proteins. In addition, they are the main producers of atmospheric oxygen and are primary producers in various food chains or trophic chains, since they serve as food for the other species in the ecosystem.

Likewise, among the benefits that can be obtained from this ecological alternative is the aforementioned biomass, its derivative. According to what was discovered from the laboratories of the Energy and Environment Directorate of the scientific-technological institution, the idea is to implement this organic matter as an energy source to create biofuels, mainly in the production of biodiesel.

Currently there are more than 30.000 different species, of which 300 have already been studied and 20 are commercially exploited.

The Energy and Environment Directorate of the IDEA Foundation, for its part, has a Cepario that protects 13 species of microalgae, including native strains, with a high level of biopotential for the food, agricultural and industrial sectors.

These microscopic organisms are ubiquitous, that is, they are scattered throughout planet Earth. They live in bodies of water (lakes, seas and rivers) and in terrestrial and extreme areas (glaciers and deserts).

Likewise, they use sunlight as a source of energy, they can tolerate a wide range of conditions and grow even in extreme environments.
