India to be recognized with Billboard's 'Pioneer' award

Telemundo will broadcast the gala where the Puerto Rican salsa singer will raise the trophy

India, known as “The Princess of Salsa”, will be recognized on June 9 with the “Pionero” award at the Billboard 'Latin Women in Music' gala. The ceremony will be broadcast on Telemundo, as announced this Tuesday, June 4.

“I feel honored and very happy that the people of Billboard and Telemundo, whom I consider my family, make me a recipient of this award,” said Linda Bell Viera Caballero in a statement.

“To Puerto Rico, New York and all of Latin America and all my fans around the world, my eternal gratitude. This recognition motivates me to move forward with strength and determination,” highlighted the Puerto Rican salsa singer.

The award recognizes those who have broken new ground, broken down barriers and inspired future generations. Mainly, through his innovative art, cultural impact and enduring legacy.

A tough one

Since the release of their first album, “Breaking Night“India marked a new era and sound for salsa. Likewise, she represented female empowerment, becoming a voice for Latinas.

In a musical genre historically dominated by men, she achieved notable success. This action would later open the way for other female artists in the genre.

By combining traditional salsa with elements of pop, house and other rhythms, La India has contributed to the evolution of salsa. So much so that it has inspired future generations of artists, expanding the reach and appeal of the genre.

The Caribbean exponent holds the record on the Billboard list as the female artist with the most #1 singles on the Tropical Airplay list, there are 11.

Many winners

In addition to La India, the Billboard event will honor Karol G, Gloria Estefan, Camila Cabello, Kany García, multiple Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican producer, composer and pianist Sergio George, among others.

At the ceremony, Karol G will receive the 'Woman of the Year' award; Estefan the 'Legend' award; Cabello the 'Global Impact' award and García the 'Spirit of Change' award.

Billboard's Latin Women in Music franchise recognizes the importance of Latina women in the music industry and honors those who have positively impacted Latin music and the industry in the past year.

The honors awarded in 2023 included Shakira, Ana Gabriel, Emilia and Thalía, EFE reported.
