Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos join forces again in “Bugonia”

The actress will star alongside Jesse Plemons, so they repeat the couple from "Kind of Kindness"

The Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and the American actress Emma Stone, who have just presented “Kind of Kindness” at the Cannes Film Festival, already have a new project underway, “Bugonia”, which they will begin filming in December.

As Lanthimos explained this Sunday, May 19 to EFE, Emma Stone will star in the film alongside Jesse Plemons, so they repeat the couple from “Kind of Kindness.”

It will be the fourth project for Lanthimos and Stone, who have worked together on “The Favorite”, 2018. "Poor Things" (“Poor creatures”, 2023) and “Kind of Kindness”.

The actress, who won the Oscar for Best Actress this year for her work in “Poor Things,” said yesterday Saturday at a press conference in Cannes that they have a great time working together. “I immerse myself in his stories, in the characters, in the way he works. “We have similar taste.”

What is known so far

“Bugonia” is a new version of “Save Planet Earth,” a 2003 film by South Korean Jang Joon-hwan, a science fiction comedy, and will feature Will Tracy, one of those responsible for the scripts of the series, as screenwriter. “Succession”.

Lanthimos' film centers on two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the powerful CEO of a large company, convinced that she is an alien trying to destroy the Earth.

According to Variety, Focus Features has obtained domestic rights to distribute the project. Meanwhile, Universal Pictures will release the film in global territories except Korea, where “Parasite” producer CJ ENM will release it. The latter finances the film with Fremantle. For their part, CAA Media Finance and WME Independent negotiated the rights agreement. 

“Yorgos Lanthimos is a cinematic visionary with a singular style that has captivated audiences around the world. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with him, Emma and the incredible teams at Element, Square Peg and CJ ENM to reimagine this twisted and darkly funny story,” Focus Features boss Peter Kujawski said of the project.

I hope Yorgos ignites a dynamic chemical fusion with his unique style and the novelty of the narrative,” Kyoungboum Ko added.
