Anthony Hopkins will be an emperor in “Those About to Die”

Anthony Hopkins, who is part of the cast in the series “Those About to Die”, returns to the small screen as Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian. The story will be released on July 18 and can be enjoyed on Amazon Prime Video

The Roman drama, which is based on the same book as “Gladiator” by Daniel Mannix, is directed by Roland Emmerich. Robert Rodat, meanwhile, stands out as the creator of the work.

The 86-year-old actor, since his appearance in "Westworld", had not had a role in any television project again. In this new project, in addition to Hopkins, the cast is led by actors such as Iwan Rheon (Tenax), Tom Hughes (Titus Flavianus), Sara Martins Cala, Jóhannes Haukur, among others.

Vespasian (9 AD-79 AD), was an ostracized emperor. The character will manage to stabilize a corrupt empire through shows and entertainment, reflecting the use of “bread and circuses” to control the masses. This strategy is very common in contemporary tensions, highlighting the similarities between the decline of Rome and current challenges in democratic societies facing autocratic pressures and economic inequalities.

Roman society

According to the official synopsis, “Those About To Die” is an epic drama that addresses an untold facet of Rome: the dirty business of entertaining the masses, giving the crowd blood and sport. Between gladiators, politicians and dynasties from the end of the first century after Christ, this fiction intermingles characters from every corner of the Roman Empire.

The series, which will have 10 episodes, is set in Ancient Rome. The novel presents us with a set of characters located in different statuses in Roman society.

Throughout the drama, the world of gladiators will also be explored, highlighting the role of the Colosseum as the great backdrop against which the characters of Ancient Rome, during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, will try to achieve their goals.
