Peppa Pig stopped being a little girl

The animated series celebrates two decades of broadcast

In the early days of television, the comic strips “Merrie Melodies”, known in Latin America as “Fantasías de Yesterday and Today”, occupied a good part of the entertainment menu for children. peppa

Through them, the production company Warner Brothers conquered the little ones with characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Porky, who were joined by others such as Woody Woodpecker, Tom and Jerry, Sylvester and Tweety, The Pink Panther, Pixie and Dixie , Maguila gorilla, Leoncio the lion, The Atomic Ant, Manotas, The Maya Bee and Fantasmagérico, among many that escape memory.

“The Flintstones” deserves a special mention, for the milestone of having been the first animated series broadcast in prime time in the United States; and “Candy Candy”, which showed a protagonist with very groundbreaking behavior, by the social standards of the time.

As the 20th century advanced, new proposals emerged such as “Mazinger Z”, “He-Man”, “Knights of the Zodiac”, “Dragon Ball”, “Dexter's Laboratory”, “The Powerpuff Girls”, “Rugrats”, “ Ren and Stimpy”, “Cow and Chick”, “Pinky and the Brain”.

To the traditional fantasy, truly surreal situations and characters drawn with a lot of creative freedom were added, contravening parameters of harmony and aesthetics inherited from Hellenic culture.

The change of millennium was also reflected on TV. Although SpongeBob SquarePants was released in 1999, it managed to position itself at the dawn of the current century. This was joined by: “Dora the Explorer”, “The Fairly OddParents”, “Jimmy Neutron”, “The Backyardigans” and, more recently, “Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug”, “Phineas and Ferb”, “Neighbors Green ”, “Amphibia” and “Hamster & Gretel”, which includes Venezuelan Joanna Hausmann on its writing staff.

In the current panorama, “Peppa Pig” occupies a special place, due to its ability to seduce little ones, being a British product that has opened a field between Americans and Japanese. Furthermore, its purpose is very clear: to strengthen the concept of family and educate in society.

And beyond

Neville Astley and Mark Baker are the creators of Peppa Pig. After developing the idea, they convinced executives at UK's Channel 5 to buy the series. The premiere was on May 31, 2004. Local success multiplied two years later, when Boomerang bought the rights for international broadcast.

The brand has been consolidated with astute marketing strategies that have allowed it to survive to this day, compared to similar products that have had a shorter life. There are seven seasons and almost 350 episodes that show the daily life of the protagonist, in the company of her parents, her grandparents, her little brother and the friends she has in the countryside.

Currently, “Peppa Pig” airs on Discovery Kids. The profits generated by the brand They are millionaires (in 2010, they were estimated at over 200 million pounds sterling), because they have given rise to three video games, playing cards, vehicles, stuffed animals, doll houses, household and toilet products, food, drinks and jewellery.

In addition, it has a theme park built in the English town of the New Forest and two albums released in British territory.

The series has not been without controversy. Criticism from the public determined that the creators included the use of seat belts and helmets when riding a bicycle.

Final clarification: the omission of the Disney factory is deliberate.
