Governor Luis Marcano unveiled mural in tribute to “Toquita” Mejías

The woman, an example of perseverance and love for her land, encouraged all the basketball, baseball and professional soccer games in Anzoátegui

As a tribute to who was considered the number one sports fan in the state of Anzoátegui, Antonia Evangelista Ruíz de Mejías “Toquita”, a mural was unveiled in one of the buildings in the Oropeza Castillo sector of Puerto la Cruz, in the Sotillo municipality.

This Saturday, June 29, Governor Luis José Marcano, accompanied by Mayor Nelson Moreno, Domingo Cirigliano, a sports support figure and family of the honoree, recalled the physical departure of “Toquita” Mejías, as this woman who dedicated herself to was recognized. Cheer on the local team at every sporting event.

“Let this image be captured so that the youth know their identity and to remember the emotion with which they supported our sports teams,” said the regional leader.

During the event, Marcano thanked the support provided to immortalize the memory, example and legacy of someone who is a reference that transcended at the national level.

The mural, 16 meters high and 6 meters wide, was made by artist Ramón Pimentel, who also captured the images of the athlete Yulimar Rojas and the singer-songwriter Oscar D'León in two other blocks of the Los Cerezos residential complex. “Works that not only beautify the city but also create attractive conditions for tourism,” said Marcano.

The love for his people

Antonia Evangelista was from Cumaná, but in 1937 she settled in Puerto La Cruz, after marrying Antonio “Cachare” Mejías, a prominent baseball player of the time.

“Toquita”, who died at 101 years of age in Puerto La Cruz, earned the title of “fan No. 1” because she attended all the sporting events of Marinos de Anzoátegui, also of Caribes de Anzoátegui in baseball and those of the Deportivo Anzoátegui in soccer.

This exemplary woman celebrated the 11 crowns that the “Eastern Battleship” won in Venezuelan professional basketball. She also accompanied Caribes de Anzoátegui in the LVBP titles that she obtained in the 2010/11, 2014/15 and 2017/18 seasons.
