The G20 will strive to overcome the crisis caused by the pandemic

Saudi Arabia opened this Saturday, in virtual format, the summit . G20, the first to be held in an Arab country, dominated by efforts to curb the new coronavirus pandemic and its devastating economic consequences, including debt.

The two-day meeting of the world's richest countries (19, to which the European Union joins) is held amid criticism for its response to the global recession and when US President Donald Trump remains without acknowledge their defeat in the presidential elections. 

This time there was no grand opening ceremony or bilateral meetings, in a summit limited to short online sessions.

The covid-19 pandemic will be the main topic of this G20, chaired by King Salmán.

In particular the distribution of vaccines following the latest hopeful clinical trials and the response to calls for the G20 Expand your funding to fight the virus, which infected more than 55 million people and killed more than 1,3 million worldwide. 

“Our peoples and economies are still suffering this impact. However, we will do everything possible to overcome this crisis through international cooperation, ”said King Salmán in his inaugural address, under the gaze of Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salmán, the country's de facto leader. / AFP
