Educators prepare mobilization against the government of Ecuador

Education workers denounce that the government sacrifices the interests of the people by making an agreement with the IMF.

Directors of the National Union of Educators (UNE), of Ecuador, will meet tomorrow to define mobilization actions against Government measures, such as the announced elimination of fuel subsidies.

According to the UNE, the Government of President Daniel Noboa joins those who make agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and sacrifice the interests of the people.

“The elimination of fuel subsidies; advance mining extractive policy; restrict investment in public works; reforms to the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS); (…) among other agreements in exchange for a new loan, it condemns the country to higher levels of poverty,” stated the UNE.

The organization adds that the agreement with the international organization so far has involved raising the Value Added Tax from 12 to 15 percent with the argument that these funds would be allocated to security.

Likewise, the UNE considers that under this pretext the Government seeks to confuse the population since violent deaths and robberies increase day by day.

The reality is that the new credit will be to pay the IMF itself and, according to the Central Bank of Ecuador (BCE), the acquisition of this debt will mean an increase in the country's inflation of four percent until the end of the current year, he warned. the guild

Other organizations such as the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) and the Unitary Workers' Front (FUT) also question the Executive's decision to eliminate subsidies for low-octane gasoline, although it has promised a compensation scheme.

Next week, dialogues are expected between the Government and representatives of social movements to discuss the issue.
