UN secretary urges removal of obstacles to Russian export

The UN secretary also welcomed the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, urged nations on Thursday to eliminate all obstacles to stop Russian exports, especially fertilizers.

During his speech at the UN Security Council, Guterres emphasized the need to bring these products to farmers, in order to avoid a serious food crisis.

"It is necessary for all states to remove all obstacles to the export of Russian fertilizers without delay. We need to get them to the farmers at a reasonable price and to the fields as soon as possible," said the Secretary General, quoted by the Sputnik news agency.

In mid-July, Russia stated its readiness to supply for free 300.000 tons of fertilizers, blocked in seaports of the European Union, to developing countries.

However, the coercive measures imposed by the United States and the European Union have stopped this action.

For this reason, Guterres stated the importance of shipments continuing and increasing so that commodity markets continue to stabilize.

“If the fertilizer market does not stabilize, next year could bring a food supply crisis. In short, the world may run out of food, "he warned.

Last July, in Türkiye; a was signed grain export agreement Ukrainians, to stop the food crisis that was looming as a result of the sanctions and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The agreement was signed by Ukraine and Russia, with the mediation of Türkiye and the UN.

As part of the agreements, the UN promised to join efforts to curb obstacles to the export of Russian products, which can help curb the crisis.

Prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine

This Thursday, Russia and Ukraine carried out a new prisoner exchange.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, quoted by the sputnik news agency, all the released people have been transferred to Russia in a military transport plane and are now in Russian Defense health centers.

"As a result of a difficult exchange negotiation process, 55 servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces and of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, who were in danger of death in captivity, were returned tonight from the Ukrainian territory controlled by kyiv," confirmed from the Russian entity.

For its part, Ukraine was handed over a total of 215 people "some of them are representatives of nationalist battalions."

Among the people who were exchanged is the Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk.

After the fact, the UN secretary hopes with "hope" that a total exchange of prisoners will be achieved.

“Yesterday's news that more than 250 prisoners of war were exchanged between Ukraine and the Russian Federation was a welcome development. I commend the efforts of both sides and hope that they build on this with more exchanges aimed at an 'everything for everyone' formula," Guterres said, quoted by the TASS agency.

The UN chief also thanked the Turkish government "for its role in securing this deal"
