UN marks position and ratifies one-China policy

A total of 181 countries established relations on the basis of the one-China principle.

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, asserted this Wednesday that the international organization adheres to the resolutions of the General Assembly and the one China policy.

“Our position is very clear. We stick to the resolutions of the General Assembly, to the one-China policy, and that is the orientation we have in everything we do," Guterres said, quoted by the Xinhua news agency.

Taiwan was recognized by the United Nations as part of Chinese territory, an action that was endorsed in 1979 by the United States itself (USA), when diplomatic relations were established between the two nations.

Specifically, since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, 181 countries that are part of the United Nations have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle.

The UN Secretary's statements come after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, violating China's sovereignty and the "one China" policy.

It should be remembered that, after Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a release, categorically condemning the visit of the representative of the Lower House, and asserted that the Asian giant "has made serious efforts and strong protests against the United States."
