Petro in Celac urges to specify plans to achieve unity in the region

He proposed establishing an economic model away from capitalism

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced on Tuesday his support for the integration initiatives in Latin America that are being discussed in VII Summit of Heads of State of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) that takes place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reports agencies.

In this sense, he made a call to strengthen the unity of Latin America based on concrete projects that benefit the region.

In this regard, he urged that Celac be the definitive space for Latin American integration. "If we give it binding power" for what is done, said and agreed upon, it becomes reality," he said.

Rhetoric of integration

Petro assured that there is a great distance between the rhetoric of Latin American integration and reality, and in this sense he gave as an example that the region did not know how to face the covid-19 pandemic together.

For the Colombian president, the region should take the example of the European Union, which integrated as a block within its diversity.

He added that the main problem facing humanity and the region is the climate crisis, which puts human life at risk, Latin Press review.

Amazon as a geopolitical chart

Likewise, he said that it is necessary to establish an economic model far from capitalism in which value is detracted from "fossil capital" through the care and protection of the Amazon jungle as a geopolitical card.

He proposed that South America deepen the use of clean energy, so that the region has "security and we could be an engine to help the United States and Canada in their energy model, they can switch to clean energy."

The president said that it is possible to become exporters of clean energy by linking the electrical grid from the south of Chile and Argentina to the north of the United States and Canada, making use of the sun in deserts, winds in mountains, and water in rivers.

Celac Forum

For the first time, all the 33 nations that make up the CELAC forum are part of the meeting, which takes place at the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel.

The sessions have the confirmed presence of more than 15 leaders, among whom, in addition to the host president, Alberto Fernández, are Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil), Gustavo Petro (Colombia), Luis Arce (Bolivia), Xiomara Castro ( Honduras), Mia Mottley (Barbados), Mario Abdo Benítez (Paraguay) and Miguel Díaz-Canel (Cuba).

Representatives of regional and multilateral organizations also participate, including the President of the European Council, Belgian Charles Michel, and the Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Chinese diplomat Qu Dongyu.
