King Felipe IV formalizes the retirement of the Ambassador of Spain in Buenos Aires

Through an official decree, the monarch ratified the decision of Pedro Sánchez's government.

The Government of Spain made official this Wednesday, after President Javier Milei's criticism of Spanish President Pedro Sánchez and his wife María Begoña Gómez, the dismissal of María Jesús Alonso Jiménez as ambassador in Buenos Aires, through a decree published in the Official Gazette of the State, which bears the signature of King Felipe VI and the Spanish Chancellor José Manuel Albares Bueno.

“At the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, and after deliberation of the Council of Ministers at its meeting on May 28, 2024, I come to order the dismissal of Mrs. María Jesús Alonso Jiménez as ambassador of Spain in the Argentine Republic, thanking you for the services provided,” the decree says.

From now on, the diplomatic representation of Spain in Argentina is reduced to an “ad interim” charge d'affaires.

The conflict between Argentina and Spain that led to the dismissal of Alonso Jiménez as ambassador began almost a month ago, when the Spanish Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, accused Milei of “ingesting substances,” statements that the Argentine government responded to through of a statement in which he not only criticized Puente but also the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez.

As the days went by, tensions escalated: Milei decided to deepen his criticism of Sánchez - in several interviews he treated him as a "coward" and "totalitarian" for believing he was the "owner of the State" - and towards his wife, Begoña Gómez.

On May 21, after Milei called Begoña Gómez “corrupt” during a Vox conclave in which she participated during her trip to Spain, the Spanish Foreign Ministry called its ambassador in Argentina for consultations. Days later, as líder of La Liberad Avanza did not offer any apology, the Sánchez government made the decision to permanently remove the ambassador.
