Limardo: "I come to enjoy my rooms at the Olympic Games to the fullest"

Rubén Limardo arrived in the Japanese capital as the most experienced athlete in the Olympic Games of the 43 Venezuelans that make up the national delegation, on the eve of his fourth consecutive universal appointment since Beijing 2008, competitions where he has always achieved results that place him among the best both in individual and team epee.

"I know that these are Games with many difficulties, many restrictions, but my mind is well focused," said the Bolivarian to the international press after arriving at the Olympic Village.

“I think that at this point, not only in my case, but in that of all the athletes, who are going to represent Venezuela in these Olympic Games, the most important thing is not to let the things that are happening, the restrictions, affect us. We hope that we can give the country the most medals ”.

Historical review

14 Venezuelans have competed for Venezuela in the sword test of the Olympic Games from Helsinki 1952 to Rio 2016, a weapon that has given the nation, one of the three golds in history, Limardo's in London 2012.

Ruben, inducted into the World Hall of Fame this year, debuted in Beijing 2008 in 23rd place in the individual sword and achieved a team diploma. In London 2012 he became Venezuela's third Olympic gold medalist by winning the title in the British capital on August 1. Four years later he stumbled early and said goodbye to the individual event (23rd place) but added a team diploma (8th place) in Rio 2016.

Regarding the expectations of achieving a new medal, the world runner-up in 2018 assures that "at this moment, everything is different because before Venezuela came with a large fencing delegation to the Olympic Games, but this time we could only classify myself by world rankings and José Quintero as champion of the pre-Olympic in saber. We are a small delegation, but one that will do its best ”.

With chance

This cycle Limardo finalized the classification in the World Cup in Vancouver, Canada, where he achieved the bronze and added the points that mathematically placed him at the forefront of the ranking of America, a criterion that gave him the classification to his fourth Olympic appointment in a path that established as the most winning athlete of the sword on the continent, with nine medals (4th, 4 silver and one bronze) in Pan American Games from 2003 to 2019 and the same number in continental tournaments since 2008, added to eight medals in his history in World Cups.

Between 2017 and 2021, Limardo was awarded in all the games of the Olympic cycle with the exception of the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, a journey in which he starred in and won the first final between siblings in the history of the Pan American Games since 1951, in Lima 2019, before his younger brother, Jesús (15-8).

Fourth Games

“I come to enjoy my fourth Olympic Games, to do the best and most beautiful thing that I have done in my life, which is to compete in a pedana, to put my heart, passion, as I always do in every competition. Hopefully we can give a new joy on July 25 to all Venezuela that always follows and supports me.

Limardo, now an immortal in the World Fencing Hall of Fame, is not daunted by the adverse outlook surrounding the hosting of the Games.

“They are very different Games. We must not allow things that happen to sabotage your head or get you out of focus. I am prepared so that everything that happens does not affect me ”. The Venezuelan, the first triple crown winner of the youth sword in history in 2005 by proclaiming himself junior world champion, World Cup champion and number one in the category ranking, will seek a new award for Venezuela from the night of the 24 July at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center - Hall B in Chiba, in the city of Mihama, Japan.
