They improve goat productivity with biotechnology

In Venezuela, artificial insemination was carried out for the first time with goat semen from the Netherlands

The artificial insemination technique in goats helps to improve their productivity and reproduction, especially when genetic material from proven sires with state-of-the-art development is used.

In this sense, in recent days, an artificial insemination process was carried out for the first time in Latin America, using the latest generation goat semen from the Netherlands, and it was on Venezuelan soil.

It was carried out in the Altos Mirandinos, Los Salias municipality of the Miranda state, and with this Venezuela is on the path to improving the productive parameters for this sector. The inseminated goats were from Los Rodríguez Farm, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The goats are from the Saanen and Alpine breeds, one of the best in terms of adaptability and milk production in the world, and were made with semen from goats from the Netherlands that had not previously been used in the region, according to the records of the European country. and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

It is the Netherlands, the nation that today has the most productive goats in the world, according to data from the WTO and the most recent from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Richard Mendoza, president of the Venezuelan Chamber of Sheep and Goat Development Industries (Cavidoc), explained to Últimas Noticias This gives an important contribution to the country because in Venezuela in the last eight years there has been considerable progress in the goat sector, mainly due to the use of biotechnology such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer.

In addition, he said that this has also been enhanced by the importation of North American goats considered the most complete, seen from a comprehensive perspective: production, morphotype, longevity and adaptability, not only to the environment, but to what modern principles of greater well-being require. and happiness for farm animals.

“Now it is added to the country, much of the development that is taking place in the Netherlands, which are the most productive goats in the world. So it is a quite important step for Venezuela, which is increasingly becoming visible as a future goat power in the region,” he asserted.

Mendoza is also the founder of Metacaprine and a pioneer in the introduction of cutting-edge genetics to Venezuela and South America. Today he has a presence in several states of the country, the Dominican Republic and plans to open another center in Panama.

Alberto Seijas, from the Animal Genetics and Reproduction Laboratory of the Agricultural Biotechnology Center of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (Ivic), stressed that this contribution to genetics may be noticed in a few years with the increase in productivity and dairy, Mincyt quotes .

“The idea is to increase the productive status of saanen goats in the country because the majority of producers work with crossbred goats that still do not reach the average production of the powerhouse countries in the sector, considering the entire productive life of each goat. and what we want to achieve is the genetic improvement of the breeds,” said Seijas.

The alpine is the most popular in the country for adapting to different climates.

The CEO of Metacaprine noted that “the Saanen and Alpine goat breeds originate from different cantons of the Swiss Alps, but it is the former that provides the highest milk yield.”

The saanen is today the goat of the world dairy industry due to its excellence in producing milk on a massive scale, because when the herd is evaluated completely, the saanen will always produce more milk than any other and the difference in relation to with persistence and productive longevity.

Likewise, the Alpine is the most popular breed in Venezuela due to its adaptability to different climates, being a very good milk producer with between 600 and 1.200 liters per lactation.

However, it will always depend on several elements and factors such as genetics, the environment, the way it is managed; It is not that any animal is going to produce that amount of milk under any conditions.

Both the male and the female are important. They are a set of elements that make them highly productive. The first thing is genetics, which really comes from a genealogy of productive animals; the second, the environmental conditions; third, nutrition and, finally, proper management, he stressed.

Determining the genetic line is crucial to guarantee and have greater confidence that the offspring will have dairy qualities for production.
The Saanen and Alpine goats, along with the Toggenburg and Nubian, are the most recognized and widespread worldwide.

  • Technique. Laparoscopic artificial insemination in Altos Mirandinos was carried out with semen from six of the best sires in the Netherlands, but Canadian and American studs were also used in the process.
  • Projection. This will not be the only procedure, it is estimated that later, along with Metacaprine, they will be carried out in other centers and units in the country.
