Valve removes 20 years of content in Garry's Mod at Nintendo's request

The game developer encourages the community to remove content on their own, to make the process easier

During the night of Wednesday, April 24, Valve published a new statement on the Garry's Mod hub, asking the community to remove all content related to intellectual properties with Nintendo after receiving DMCA takedown requests.

In case you're not familiar, Garry's Mod is a sandbox game where players can load their own objects and character models and use them to create animations or other games that was released in 2006 by Garry Newman with his Facepunch Studios.

It uses a modified version of the Source engine, which uses video game elements such as those that appear in The Orange Box and Left 4 Dead, although it later became an independent game with the same content and allows you to import 3D models of basically any object. or character.

Much Garry's Mod content could be gone forever

Garry's Mod currently has approximately 1,8 million user-submitted content on the game's Steam Workshop, and the most popular downloads of all time include intellectual properties from Nintendo, Disney, Microsoft, and more.

A news update on the game's Steam page says that all Nintendo content that has been uploaded to the game since its original inception in 2004 is now in the process of being removed. To understand the magnitude of this, the game's website claims that there are more than 300.000 models, maps and gadgets available for download through the Steam Workshop, so it could be a while before it becomes a Nintendo-free zone.

“Some of you may have noticed that certain Nintendo-related workshop items have recently been removed,” the message reads. “This is not a mistake, the takedowns came from Nintendo.

“Honestly, this is pretty fair. This is Nintendo content and what they allow and don't allow is up to them. They don't want you to play with that stuff in Garry's Mod; That's your decision, we have to respect it and eliminate everything we can.

“This is a continuous process, since we have 20 years of loads to carry out. If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo-related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot.”

For a moment it was believed that the matter was a false positive

After the news broke, various users on social media suggested that the DMCA takedown requests did not actually come from Nintendo itself, but rather were the work of trolls attempting to falsely claim ownership of the intellectual property.

However, Garry's Mod creator Garry Newman took note of these suggestions and said: “Yes, we have your emails and direct messages, we have seen your threads and we are doing our own investigations. "We need to take these things seriously (particularly by Nintendo), but we also can't allow people to misuse DMCA takedowns."

Minutes later, Newman extended another tweet saying that “I have been assured that Nintendo has verified that the deletions are legitimate, so this will continue as planned. I'm sorry."
