Just Cause is more than ready to make the leap to the big screen

The project has spent a decade in the freezer but now it seems that it will become a reality thanks to Universal Pictures

The video game industry is full of open-world action titles, but without a doubt the Just Cause franchise is on the long podium of the most ambitious and action-packed. Now, 20 years after its first installment, it seems that it will have its own live action movie.

Just Cause was first released for PlayStation 2 in 2006. The game was developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. Now, SquareEnix is the one who owns the intellectual property of the open-world action title with acrobatic movement mechanics, intense combat sequences and full of many explosions starring Rico Rodríguez, a CIA agent.

Now, with the confirmation of the live action based on the game, Rico is more than ready to make an epic leap to the big screen. This project seems completely appropriate, as both the game's plot, the protagonist's personality, and the almost endless action scenes in Just Cause feel completely adequate for a typical Hollywood-produced action movie.

The Just Cause movie has spent more than a decade trying to become a reality

According to The Hollywood Reporter, we have worked for 10 years to make this a reality. The license has changed hands on several occasions, finally ending up in the hands of Universal Pictures, who have given it a much more decisive push, motivated by the recent success of video game adaptations to live action.

Kelly McCormick and David Leitch (The Fall Guy) are on hand to produce the film, working hand in hand with Dmitri Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy Stevenson, who together worked on Tomb Raider and Sonic the Hedgehog. The film will be directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, who has recently been credited with the success of the film Blue Bee.
