Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, dies at 68

Mangaka not only marked a before and after in the childhood of many, but also left its legacy in general culture.

Today, March 8, 2024, anime and manga lovers, especially Dragon Ball fans, received the news of the unfortunate death of Akira Toriyama at the age of 68. The beloved manga creator leaves an unassailable legacy and will surely be missed by his loved ones and fans around the world after leaving his mark on the childhoods of many.

Through a post on X, the official Dragon Ball account announced the death of the mangaka on March 1 due to an acute subdural hematoma. The post goes on to say that a small funeral was held with Toriyama's immediate family and that fans should avoid sending flowers or other gifts.

The sudden death of Akira Toriyama follows the precedent of other renowned manga artists who have left this plane without completing their works such as Kentaro Miura (creator of Berserk) at 54 years old, Kazuki Takahashi (creator of Yu Gi Oh) at 61 years old, HighSchool of the Dead's Daisuke Sato at 57, Kaoru Tada at 37, and the list goes on.

Akira Toriyama marked a before and after in history

The Dragon Ball creator still had a wide variety of franchise projects in the works at the time of his passing. This undoubtedly includes the tasks of him continuing to work on the Dragon Ball Super manga, his participation in Dragon Ball: Daima.

The Dragon Ball franchise was a global milestone, managing to bring the culture of manga and anime to the West with more than 260 million manga volumes sold, 5 television series, 21 movies, more than 100 video games, and above all... a sin end of memories

Other of his projects such as Sand Land, which will release a new video game later this year, Dragon Quest and Chrono Triger have that artistic style that characterizes them so much, allowing future generations to also grow with their works.
