The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez-Ramírez, reported that Venezuela is working on a project to monitor wastewater in order to identify the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 and possible sources of contagion by Covid-19 .
“This water project was the initiative of Venezuelan researchers who have sought references of what is being done in the world to fight against the new coronavirus. It is a joint strategic project between the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) and the ministries for Health and Water Care ”, according to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology this Wednesday.
During his intervention in the Maduro Guerra Live program, Jiménez-Ramírez explained that, in the next semester, the residual water of the communities will be evaluated to detect where infectious processes and foci are developing by sectors, by parishes.
"We go to those sewage tanks in residential areas and take samples, make determinations of the viral particles of the SARS-CoV-2 that causes Covid-19 and we can see where the possible sources of growth of the new coronavirus are developing. to predict epidemiological scenarios ”, he expressed.
The minister commented that the great advantage of this new project is that it can be accompanied in a way that is more oriented to the Ministry of Health in the diagnosis of Covid-19, house by house.
“From the wastewater we can predict epidemiological scenarios and we can see a possible growth in infection rates per parish. We are working with laboratories at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) and with countries like Spain and Chile that also have this proposal ”, he emphasized.
In this sense, the head of the scientific portfolio indicated that the project has already been presented to the Presidential Commission for Prevention, Care and Control of Covid-19 for the assessment and respective approval of all protocols.
“We have technical working and exchange tables to face the pandemic. Each one presents a project, a proposal or a validation of the vaccines. It is not a random question. In Venezuela, a very precise technical exercise is carried out ”, he pointed out.
I work without rest
The Minister of Popular Power for Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez-Ramírez, stressed that the work of the Bolivarian Government to guarantee the health of the people grows day by day.
“There is a group of professionals dedicated exclusively to genomic surveillance, to daily sequence the virus, not only for the Amazonian variant but for any transformation process that the SARS-CoV-2 virus has, since these mutations will affect the vaccine development process. We also carry out genomic surveillance to favor which are the most appropriate vaccines for the country ”, he stressed.
He also assured that there is a whole line of research to characterize the immune response of Venezuelan patients to covid-19.
“We are working on a project that has to do with children and the new coronavirus and is being developed by the Institute of Immunology of the UCV. Despite the siege and the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the US Government, Venezuelans continue to move forward with innovation, with our scientific-technical capabilities, "he said.
