The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, revealed this Monday that Pope Francis signed the canonization of Doctor José Gregorio Hernández.

The information was made known unofficially by the Head of State during the broadcast of his 48th program of “Con Maduro +”.

“Let's hope they make it official, because my good sources in the Vatican have informed me that Pope Francis signed the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández last week (…) It is a great gift for our national spirituality because José Gregorio belongs to all of us, José Gregorio touches our hearts and through him the power of God is manifested (…) Although they have not officially said it, I have the video,” said Maduro.

Canonize is to declare a deceased person as a saint or saint, for this, the Catholic Church demands a series of requirements that must be met once the beatification of someone who has the power of intercession before God, such as the now blessed has been achieved. José Gregorio Hernández.

Let us remember that on April 30, 2021, the beatification ceremony of Doctor José Gregorio Hernández took place in the San Juan Bautista church, in Caracas, where José Gregorio carried out much of his work as a doctor.

With a call for peace and understanding among Venezuelans, Cardinal Baltazar Porras began the ecclesiastical ceremony that sealed the beatification of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández. The Venezuelan priest thanked Pope Francis for granting this request for the faith of the Venezuelan people.

"We grant that the venerable Servant of God, from now on be called blessed and be celebrated according to the acts on October 26," said Monsignor Aldo Giordano.

The miracle that, through the intercession of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, restored health to a girl who was shot in the head.

On March 10, 2017, Yaxury Solórzano, who at that time was only 10 years old, was hit by a shotgun bullet with multiple pellets in his head, behind his right ear. It happened when some thugs tried to rob his father. After her incident, she was rushed to the Pablo Acosta Ortiz hospital in San Fernando de Apure, with a wound to her skull and an exposed brain mass.

When performing the respective tomography, the specialists found a fracture in the right parietal bone, edema and air in the cranial cavity, so they referred her to an institution with neurosurgery that had the necessary conditions to intervene. The operation consisted of removing part of the parietal cranial bone (known as a decompressive craniotomy plus schirlectomy). According to the prognoses of neurosurgeons, there was no great life expectancy. On the other hand, if the patient survived, she would present disability.

During the surgical intervention, Yaxury's mother fervently requested the intercession of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández before God, and she herself affirms that she perceived his presence immediately, when she felt a hand on her shoulder and a voice that spoke to her: “ Stay calm, everything will be fine!” That's how it went. Once the surgery was performed at the private health center, Yaxury returned to the Pablo Acosta Ortiz hospital again under medical observation. Recovering satisfactorily and without complications, she continued her treatment in Pediatrics, and after 20 days she was referred to different specialties for her care (neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine, pediatrics and rehabilitation).

The neurosurgeon and team leader, Alexander Krinitzky, the neurosurgeon Bárbara Martínez, the anesthesiologist Rafael Utrera, the pediatrician Liliana Contreras and Idalid Morales as instrumentalist, were the medical team that treated the case, in San Fernando de Apure. Although little chance of life was expected, Krinitzky commented that the miracle began to become evident when, a week after graduating from the operation, “Yaxury walked smiling, without complications.” What happened could not be anything other than a miracle.

Given this perspective, a commission from the Archdiocese of Caracas visited San Fernando de Apure on December 18, 2018, with the presence of Cardinal Baltazar Porras, establishing the Ecclesiastical Court to process the case that would then become the alleged miracle. On January 09, 2020, the Medical Commission of the Congregation for the Cause of Saints approved the miracle attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, and the same occurred on April 27, 2020 with the Theological Commission .

On June 19, 2020, Venezuela joyfully celebrated the promulgation of the decree authorized by Pope Francis, which approved the Beatification of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, Doctor of the Poor, distinguished Venezuelan layman, example of Christian virtues.

José Gregorio Hernández was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1986, after the Congregation for the Cause of Saints analyzed opinions of those who knew him and the Supreme Pontiff approved the Decree of Heroic Virtues to consider him venerable.

Starting in 1949, the process of his canonization began, which was initiated by the then archbishop of the Venezuelan capital, Monsignor Lucas Guillermo Castillo, and had the enthusiastic support of the faithful who adored him.

José Gregorio Hernández was born in 1864 and died in 1919 in Caracas. He is admired for his expertise as a doctor and his strong will to serve those most in need.
