Viva Venezuela Festival: an immense showcase of national culture

For a week, the deepest cultural expressions of the people were shown with their beauty and plurality in Caracas, Miranda and La Guaira

One day after the end of the first Viva Venezuela World Festival, after a week of intense programming, it is worth highlighting the titanic effort of the Venezuelan Government to make visible our traditional expressions, their knowledge and practices, and the rich variety of nuances that are capable of exhibiting popular culture from its origins to its staging.

There were the demonstrations at the site and the date of their ritual act. It was the projection of the liturgical and festive heritage that accompanies each deity, each brotherhood, manifesting in various locations in Caracas, La Guaira and Miranda its deep roots, an identity that unites our people from north to south, from east to west.

As if that were not enough, we had the opportunity to fraternize with the delegations of brother countries from four continents, who broke down borders and exposed before our eyes their songs, dances and ritual practices, as a revelation of the ties that unite us through the dialogue and solidarity.

In the Monumental

Venezuela constitutes a multicultural amalgam of ancestral practices, a product of our Afro-descendant, indigenous and Spanish footprint. This mystical and material explosion was experienced in a single place, on Friday, May 10, Afro-Venezuelan and Plastic Artist Day: the Simón Bolívar Monumental Stadium in La Rinconada, a stage that has rarely been taken over by a massive audience like the that follows pop music artists. This is the case of the singer Karol G, who managed to attract 40.000 attendees to her concert on March 22.

Our traditions exceeded expectations and filled the venue, with more than forty thousand souls who managed to enjoy an event practically unprecedented in the history of the country due to its size and display. Only comparable, conceptually, with the 1948 Tradition Festival that welcomed the government of Rómulo Gallegos and organized by the writer Juan Liscano.

On this occasion there was a colorful and fraternal congregation that brought together, for example, the first foreman of the dances to San Benito de Palermo of the Mesa de Esnujaque in Trujillo, Arnoldo Ramírez, with Gualberto Ibarreto and Francisco Pacheco; or to the revelers of San Pedro from the 23 de Enero neighborhood of Guatire with Betsayda Machado and Lilia Vera, all together and mixed up on the same set.

And if the spectacular rhythms, flags, drums, songs and dresses were not enough, the day held a surprise that amazed not only those present but all of Caracas and those who followed the television broadcast of the event that Minister Ernesto Villegas excitedly announced: an artistic drone dance over the Caracas sky that drew messages and figures of traditions, a technological spectacle that was possible thanks to a donation from the Chinese Government to our country and that was presented for the first time in Latin America.

Traditions everywhere

Venezuela has nine cultural expressions that have entered through the front door into the registry of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity according to UNESCO: the oral tradition of the Mapoyos and their symbolic references in the ancestral territory; traditional knowledge and technologies related to the cultivation and processing of curagua; the work songs of the plains of Colombia and Venezuela; the San Pedro party that takes place between Guarenas and Guatire; the Dancing Devils of Corpus Christi; the biocultural program for the safeguarding of the tradition of the Holy Palm; the El Callao Carnival; the festive cycle around the devotion and worship of San Juan Bautista and in December 2023 the party of the Holy Innocents of Caucagua.

Last April, the file proposing the tamunangue or sones de negro for evaluation was presented to UNESCO, while the files in the country on the casabe (which will be introduced this year), the arepa and the joropo (along with Colombia) for its eventual patrimonialization.

All of them and many more circulated, thanks to the brotherhoods themselves or through screening groups, in the public, open and free stages arranged on the Caracas, Miranda and La Guaira route of the starting stage of the festival, which will then extend throughout the entire the homeland geography. “We are going throughout the country, culture shining in all the towns, in all the neighborhoods, in all the squares of Venezuela,” President Nicolás Maduro announced during the opening ceremony.

Concerts were staged in the Plaza de los Museos, parades on the Paseo de Bellas Artes and demonstrations of all kinds in parishes and municipalities, along with a very varied offer of courses, workshops and conversations that took over neighborhood or conventional spaces such as the Gallery of National Art, Unearte, the Science Museum, etc., where tribute was paid to the knowledge and experiences of teachers from all over the country.

Never before have expressions such as male and female cultist, brotherhoods, promesero, circulated in the common speech of our people who, in addition, were able to closely experience the ceremonies practiced by intricate communities in the country to celebrate their identity. For example, the projection of the Devils of Naiguatá in the Plaza Los Símbolos of the San Pedro parish, hypnotized more than one hundred schoolchildren and neighbors who learned how to pray to the May cross thanks to the devotees of the same community.

A whole group of practitioners or admirers of our cultural manifestations met to exchange knowledge, to find typical crafts or simply to exchange greetings and friendship, which is an essential component of Venezuelanness.

Without losing his smile despite the excessive work, as journalist Lil Rodríguez warns, Minister Villegas summarized that the effort was colossal. “I do not want to wait for this hurricane to end to give my recognition and gratitude to artists, producers, the team of the Ministry of Culture, the heads of cabinets, governorships and mayors and to all those who have provided their support,” he concluded. he.
