Colombian artists J Balvin, Maluma and Camilo dominate nominations for the 2021 Lo Nuestro Awards, announced this Tuesday by the Univisió networkn, which also revealed that the awards ceremony will be held live on February 18 in Miami and will be preceded by its traditional "magenta carpet," EFE reviews on its website.
Thanks to his album "Colores" and successful collaborations, J Balvin rose as the artist with the most mentions. His 14 nominations that include artist, album and song of the year, the latter category that includes his songs “Purple” and “Rhythm (Bad Boys for Life)”, with whom he worked with the Black Eyed Peas.
Maluma, who follows him with 12 nominations, has been recognized mainly for his work in his production "Papi Juancho". His most nominated song is "Hawaii", including the remix he did with Canadian artist The Weeknd.
Camilo, for his part, swept again in recognitions for his album "Por primera vez". Edited by the label Made by hand, by his father-in-law, Ricardo Montaner. The album has earned the singer of “Vida de Rico” most of his 10 nominations which include artist of the year, song of the year for “Favorite” and remix of the year for “Tattoo”, his collaboration with Rauw Alejandro.
The fourth most nominated artist in this year's Premio Lo Nuestro is Ozuna. The Puerto Rican competes with Colombians in the artist of the year and song of the year categories for "Fantasía". He also has two mentions in remix of the year with “Caramelo” and “La cama”.
Surprisingly, the Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny did not manage to be at the top of the race for the nominations for Premios Lo Nuestro, despite having released three albums in 2020 and having been for several weeks the most listened to artist on the entire planet.
The acclaimed “Bad Rabbit” is in the large group of artists with seven nominations, which also includes Anuel AA, Karol G, Natti Natasha, Sebastián Yatra and Sech.
This year, the women of Latin music were left wanting to continue to outperform men in nominations. Karol G and Natti Natasha are the ones who stood out, followed by Rosalía and Becky G, with four; Kany García and Carolina Ross, with three, and Shakira, Anitta, Chiquis, Cazzu, Farina, Nicki Nicole and Chesca, with two.
Natalia Lafourcade, who won the Latin Grammy for album of the year, has just one nomination for video of the year.
Although the nominations for Premios Lo Nuestro continue to be dominated by urban music artists, based on reggaeton, the exponents and songs of the different sub-genres of the Mexican region have begun to follow their heels.
At the head are the group Los Ángeles Azules, Alejandro Fernández, with his album "Made in Mexico", and Christian Nodal, with "Ayayay". They each have six nominations and compete directly in broad categories for artist of the year and album of the year.
They did not manage, however, to enter the category of song of the year, where Caliber 50 does aspire for its song “Only you”.
Grupo Firme also appears with six candidates, Caliber 50 follows with five and Banda MS stood out with four.
In a show of the interest of artists who work in English in music in Spanish, Premio Lo Nuestro has a record number of them nominated.
The group Black Eyed Peas and rapper Nicki Minaj have four nominations each. For their part, The Weeknd, Travis Scoot and Snoop Dogg have two nominations and Dua Lipa one.
Univision has produced Premios Juventud and Latin Grammys since the pandemic began. However, the 2021 edition of Premios Lo Nuestro will be its first award ceremony in which it will have a carpet, although "following strict health regulations to avoid contagion" of the covid-19.
The awards will be delivered live on February 18 from the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat basketball team.
