With greater security as a composer, and a group of luxury guests, Karol G invites her fans to board flight "KG0516".
The title of the album released Thursday night refers to May 16, the date on which he signed a contract with his stage name, in 2006.
"That was the first day that under a legally established role my name was Karol G, so the journey begins from that moment," said the Colombian singer, whose real name is Carolina Giraldo Navarro, in a recent interview by video call from Miami.
On the album cover you can see several planes, one of them strategically placed in the crotch of a muscular model. The plane also appears in the presentation video of the album published on the artist's YouTube channel, as well as in that of “Location” with Anuel AA and J Balvin, one of her previously released singles.
"It is a flight number, it is the flight to which I am taking all the people, all my followers, when they listen to my album," said Karol G.
On the album, “200 copas” stands out, a song that he performs alone about a heartbreak in which he mentions his mega-hit “Tusa”. The theme has influences from Mexican and Colombian ranchera music, as the genre is very popular in its country. And very much the song evokes a canteen atmosphere.
"I had a few cool drinks to be able to record that song," he said. “And I recorded it in a single 'take' because I wanted it to be intended. I didn't want it to be perfect. Just as if I were really going up to the canteen at the bar, I sang the song for my friend and I was coming down again ”.
With his compatriot Camilo he interprets "With you I'm going to death", a song that talks about two people who had a bad time in a relationship but who seek to remember the good and get ahead without giving up.
They recorded it together one day when Karol G's parents were also in the studio. For the artist, the good vibes are a very important part of the project and that is why she loved that Camilo composed with her.
"That theme sounded to me like if we sang it together it might make more sense," he said. "I think it's one of the collaborations that is going to give a lot to talk about on the album because it became very magical."
On "DVD", he makes daring rhymes like "Give it back and let's do another porn / Your friend, and yours, if not, I'm not satisfied", with a style similar to "El Makinon" and "Bichota".
"I think that 'DVD', 'Makinon' and 'Bichota' could be first cousins", said Karol G. "Those three songs in particular are very street ... It is simply to demonstrate a more daring, riskier, more empowered woman".
It is a feeling that he wanted to share with his followers, that "made them feel bad, empowered, daring," he said. "Those three (songs) I could say that they are a perfect triangle."
Ozuna is another of the guests for the album, in "Odyssey." Karol G chose this title for the song because the interpretation and composition of the Puerto Rican urban star reminded him a lot of his first album, also titled.
“In addition to the song talking about an odyssey that a couple is experiencing, I think that when people hear the name and hear Ozuna in that song, it will take everyone, like that moment, to incredible moments that we live with that album. ”, He explained.
For its part, "Beautiful Boy" has a very special story. It came from a video that Karol G saw on Tik Tok with a girl doing an acoustic cover of Sean Kingston's “Beautiful Girls”.
"When I heard that, I don't know why the idea of using that audio came to mind," he said. "I sent the video to my producer and said, 'I need you to take the audio from that video and start a song.'
In the end they got in touch with the girl in the video, Emilee, and listed her as a collaborator. The young woman was in very good company, as the American rapper Ludacris is also invited.
"He broke it, he broke it real like old times in his songs," Karol G said of the rapper. "The meaning of the song was that love I feel for 'my beautiful boy' (my beautiful boy)," he added without referring to anyone in particular.
Karol G's third studio album comes with the release of the video for “El Makinon”. Nathy Peluso, Wisin y Yandel, Ivy Queen and Nicky Jam are other guests.
Recently Karol G, together with J Balvin, topped the list of nominees for the Latin American Music Awards, with nine mentions each. The awards are presented on April 15 in Sunrise, Florida.
The singer said she was pleased to compete in general fields and not just as a female or urban artist. And she is the only woman in the category of artist of the year, where she is measured with Balvin, Anuel AA, Bad Bunny, Christian Nodal, Eslabon Armado, Maluma, Ozuna and Sech.
"To see my name there next to so many artists that I admire a lot, to be the most nominated woman, that two Colombian artists are the most nominated," he said. "Wow! It's a lot of happiness and it's a lot of responsibility ”.
Having been nominated for a Latin Grammy in major categories, her ubiquitous “Tusa” featuring Nicki Minaj, featured on “KG0516,” is once again nominated for song of the year at the Latin AMAs. Karol G said that she is calm, because her song is already a winner for her.
“They can take number 1 from me on Billboard, they can take away any 'chart' (list), it may not have won the Grammy, it may not have won any award and 'Tusa' is 'Tusa', because it actually marked my generation and that may be the greatest prize perhaps there is in life, "he said. “It is the special recognition of the people. That cannot be overcome ”.
