UN Secretary: The world is "ravaged by a perfect storm"

Part of these effects are the covid-19 pandemic, the climatic abyss and the Russia-Ukraine conflict

The Secretary General of the United Nations (ONU), Antonio Guterres, said on Wednesday that the world is undergoing a "perfect storm", which is why it is necessary to establish mechanisms to face a new challenge.

“We cannot face problems unless we look them square in the eye. And we are looking into the eye of a category 5 hurricane. Our world is ravaged by a perfect storm on several fronts,” Guterres said, during the Davos Forum in Switzerland.

For this reason, the head of the UN pointed out that a "set of interconnected challenges that accumulate like a chain collision" has caused the world to enter the brink of collapse.

Part of these are the lingering effects of the covid-19 pandemic, climate abyss and conflicts, especially the one registered between Russia-Ukraine.

We are facing "the most serious levels of geopolitical division and mistrust in generations," he stressed, quoted by the UN News Center.

He also gave as an example the east-west division in which there is a risk of "the separation of the two largest economies in the world."

In order to overcome all these divisions, he proposed to reform or implement "equity in the world financial system" and to restore climate actions, among other actions.

The great lie

Oil companies lied about global warming because they have known about the consequences of their "star product" for decades, said UN Secretary General António Guterres on January 18 during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"Some oil giants sold the big lie. Like the tobacco industry, those responsible must be held accountable," Guterres said.

According to a study which was published last week in the prestigious magazine Science, the US oil company ExxonMobil he dismissed the conclusions of his own scientists about the role of fossil fuels in climate change.

The study found that company scientists modeled and predicted global warming “with astonishing accuracy.” Yet, Guterres said, ExxonMobil “spent the next two decades denying that same climate science.”

"Some fossil fuel producers were fully aware in the 1970s that their flagship product was going to burn up the planet," the secretary noted. "But, like the tobacco industry, they paid little attention to their science."

The Secretary-General called for an "end to fossil fuels" and warned that the goal of limiting global warming to 1,5 degrees Celsius "is slipping away."

"Today, fossil fuel producers and their supporters continue to increase production, knowing that their economic model is incompatible with the survival of humanity," he said.

"This madness already seems like science fiction, even though we know that the collapse of the ecosystem is a pure and hard scientific fact," he said, calling on the business leaders present in the room to present, before the end of the year, "credible and transparent" proposals on how to achieve zero emissions.

Last November, UN experts published a series of recommendations during the climate summit held in Egypt, COP27, warning that companies cannot ensure net-zero emissions by investing in new fossil fuels, causing deforestation, or offsetting emissions with carbon credits instead of reducing them.
