The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said goodbye before the Human Rights Council in Genoa, Switzerland, from the position that she will leave on August 31, reported Sputnik.
"I thank you for the trust placed in the work and experience of my Office, which you draw on to fulfill the growing number of mandates assigned to it. But as always, the resources to meet these needs deserve to be strengthened, and I hope that due consideration will be given to this," Bachelet told the UN Human Rights Council.
Bachelet took office as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on September 1, 2018.
The President of the UN Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, said this Tuesday, the 30th, that "wherever she is and in whatever capacity she occupies, Michelle Bachelet will continue to champion human rights, setting an example, and inspiring the struggle of all those who seek a better world."
Bachelet received a standing ovation at the Human Rights Council meeting.
In June, the High Commissioner clarified on Twitter that she was not seeking a second term "for personal reasons."
"The time has come to return to Chile and be with my family. I urge States to find common ground to arrive at solutions to our shared challenges in the area of human rights," he wrote at the time.
Bachelet, who is a doctor by profession, was president of Chile twice: between 2006-2010 and 2014-2018.
