Guatemala experiences another day of protests against corruption

They reject the management of Giammattei and his cabinet and Congress for their unpopular laws

Guatemala lives today another day of mobilizations against corruption, the high cost of living, the co-optation of the State and the criminalization of protest, reviewed Prensa Latina.

Members of the General Coordinator of Students of the San Carlos University, the Peasant Unity Committee, the Social and Popular Assembly and the Peasant Development Committee, this time lead the actions such as the closure of the marches and blockades that began on the 9th from the territories to demand the resignation of Alejandro Giammattei.

Starting in the morning hours, the different forces left for the points established in the call, including the Supreme Court of Justice, Congress and the Presidential House, until they reached the iconic Plaza de la Constitución.

Like last Tuesday, the demands aim to put an end to the cooptation of the State, the persecution of justice operators, human rights defenders and journalists, as well as against a bill in Congress to silence the protest.

"The more the corrupt get fatter, the more the people are falco", "Let's go to the street, they will not shut us up", "Let's strike", "Everyone against corruption", "Fraud falls" and "Let's stop the dictatorship" , are the slogans on the blankets of those who support the mobilization, despite the rain in the last few hours.

As they passed through important capital arteries, they called on citizens to join this fight, which belongs to everyone, according to the Social and Popular Assembly, which justified taking to the streets to demand the freedom of political prisoners, defenders of human rights, territories, indigenous peoples and freedom of expression.

For its part, another of the indigenous organizations present, the Waqib'Kej, expressed that "it has been the original peoples who have sustained food production and on their shoulders they carry the oblivion and racism of an entire dictatorial, colonial, military and the indifference of urban populations.

In the case of the Sancarlista students, in the order of two thousand, according to the organizers, they denounce the electoral fraud that led de facto to the rectory of Walter Mazariegos, whom they do not recognize.

They defend university autonomy and the right to education of the only public university in the country, which is why they have been taking over several campuses in this capital and in other departments for months as a measure of pressure against Mazariegos and his followers with the in order to try to repeat the process.

Last Tuesday, the territories staged blockades and marches on 11 important highway sections at a time of harsh criticism of the management of Giammattei and his cabinet and Congress for their unpopular laws.
