Europe welcomes Zelensky with slight differences after “disastrous” meeting with Trump

This Sunday, London will host European leaders who will support Zelensky, but some have reservations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in London on Saturday morning, where he will take part on Sunday in the European summit convened by the British government to discuss the war, which will take place after the tense meeting between the Ukrainian and the US President, Donald Trump.

The plane carrying Zelensky landed at Stansted Airport, northeast of London, a few minutes after 11.00:XNUMX GMT, from where a convoy transported the president to an undisclosed location.

Zelensky's arrival is surrounded by great expectations after the disastrous result of his meeting yesterday with Trump and the US vice president, JD Vance, in which harsh words were exchanged and which led to the suspension of the signing of the economic agreement that had been concluded between Washington and kyiv.

The summit called for tomorrow by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will bring together representatives of 15 countries in central London, where, according to Downing Street, they will try to reinforce the position on the ground with Ukraine as the main point on the agenda.

Following the unprecedented row between Zelensky and Trump, the vast majority of European leaders have publicly shown their support for the Ukrainian, including Starmer himself, who, according to a spokesman, expressed his "unwavering support."

Without unanimity

Despite the majority support for Zelensky from European leaders, there are some disagreements between the Ukrainian leader's stance on the war and his actions in the midst of the confrontation.

Slovakia has distanced itself from the alleged intention of Ukraine and the European Union to reach a "peace through force" agreement with Russia, and reiterated its decision not to support kyiv, either militarily or economically, in this endeavor.

"Slovakia has reservations about the unrealistic strategy of 'peace through strength', which is supposed to serve only as a reason for the continuation of the war in Ukraine," Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who favours normalising institutional relations with Moscow, said in a statement.

"Ukraine will never be strong enough to fight from a position of military power," Fico added, echoing the words of a visibly angry US President Donald Trump in the presence of his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office of the White House on Friday.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Saturday called on the European Union to follow the Trump administration's lead and hold direct talks with Russia on a ceasefire and peace deal in Ukraine.

In the letter, Orbán highlights "strategic differences in our approach to Ukraine that cannot be overcome by drafts or communiqués."
