They question the King of Spain for not standing up to Bolívar's sword

Pablo Iglesias accused Felipe VI of wanting to humiliate the democratic dignity of Spain

Politicians and academics from Spain have questioned the king of that country, Felipe VI, for not standing up during the passage of the sword of the Liberator Simón Bolívar during the inauguration of the new president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, on Sunday.

Petro ordered that Bolívar's sword be moved from the Nariño Palace, seat of the Colombian presidency, until the inauguration ceremony. This is how the ceremony had a recess until, after half an hour, a group of soldiers moved the sword into a glass case.

The heads of state and foreign guests at the inauguration rose from their chairs to welcome the sword, except for the Spanish king. This caused a wave of criticism from politicians in his country.

One of those who took a stand was Pablo Iglesias, former vice president of the Spanish government and founder of Podemos, who accused Felipe VI of "humiliating Spain's democratic dignity."

"Bolivar's war was not against the Spanish. It was a war between patriots and royalists. Felipe VI sought to humiliate the democratic dignity of Spain and the honor of Latin American nations. The President must call him to order and demand institutional respect," he said via Twitter.

He also said that the king did not represent "the House of Bourbon, he represented Spain," which makes "the lack of respect for a symbol of Latin American freedom even more serious."

Another who took a stand was Pablo Echenique, spokesperson for the Podemos parliamentary group, who described Felipe VI's actions as "a huge lack of respect," according to a post on Twitter.

"King Felipe VI is the only one who remains seated before the sword of Bolívar, which represents the independence and sovereignty of so many Latin American peoples who are no longer vassals. What a lack of respect. Then why do the far-right VOX supporters like this king so much?" he added.

Likewise, the Minister of Social Rights and member of Podemos, Ione Belarra, urged Felipe VI to apologize for not standing up to the passing of Bolívar's sword, a symbol of liberation from the Spanish yoke.

"The inauguration of Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez inaugurates the first Colombian government serving its people. Our role was to show our utmost respect and support for the democratic process. What happened is inexplicable and deserves an apology," he said on Twitter.

During his stay in Colombia, the monarch met with Petro and with the outgoing president of Colombia, Iván Duque.

  1. Undoubtedly, the Liberator Simón Bolívar is the greatest man that gave birth to this continent, those arrogant people will never understand him, even today they are afraid, long live Bolívar

  2. Sincerely, many people like me are extremely amazed that we are in the XNUMXst century, in a country with so much scientific progress, with so many literate people and so many scholars, there are still people with that great obscurantism of continuing to believe in a kind of blue blood. , of a unique species that is supposedly above other people, of kings, prince and queen, apparently they were stuck in time

  3. Undoubtedly it represents an affront to the dignity of the free men and women of our continent, it does not offend who wants but who can, he did not get up but stared at her which means that he reminded her that there is the spirit of the man who led the fight to expel from here the Spanish empire which he still represents today... Warning that the Sword of Bolívar walks through Latin America!

  4. Well done Bolivar! He is still moved by the hatred and contempt of those imperialist tyrants, who upon seeing your sword feel the fear and humiliation of knowing that the man who carried that sword took control of the Latin American countries that they humiliated... Long live Bolívar! !

  7. True…it was a lack of respect…that king lives in the past…and does not represent the Spanish people…but rather a social class that is called to become extinct as unnecessary!!

  8. An unequivocal reflection of the classist arrogance that still stings after having been humiliated by *the "fool" Genius of America*

  9. Faithful image and consistent with the arrogant attitude of a parasitic class, which still exists, despite being in an aura of modernity in the new century, to think stupidities of special or superior races blessed by imaginary gods, is absurd.
