The academic Bernardo Arévalo de León, from the progressive political group Movimiento Semilla, leads the vote count in the Guatemalan presidential election with 80% of the votes counted
According to data from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Arévalo de León has received 450.000 votes, while her opponent, Sandra Torres Casanova, accumulates 331.000.
The winner of this Sunday's election will replace the current president, Alejandro Giammattei, for a period of four years starting next January 14.
Arévalo is emerging as president
Bernardo Arévalo de León, from the Semilla political group, is emerging as the next president of Guatemala, counted this Sunday 80% of the votes cast in the election in the Central American country.
Arévalo de León adds a total of 1,9 million votes (59%), according to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, while her opponent, Sandra Torres Casanova, accumulates 880.00 ballots with her designation (35%).
Thus, Arévalo de León would be the first president of a progressive and moderate left character to govern Guatemala, waiting for his victory to materialize with the rest of the sum of votes in the next few hours.
