Argentina rejected on Wednesday the military exercises carried out by the United Kingdom in the Malvinas Islands, illegally occupied by the British since 1833.
For the Argentine government, these maneuvers constitute a "departure" from the United Nations (UN) resolutions that call for the resumption of negotiations for sovereignty, arbitrarily suspended by the British in 1982, following the war in the South Atlantic.
Through a statement - quoted by the Telam agency—, the Government of Alberto Fernández expressed that Argentina "once again categorically rejects the holding of military maneuvers in the Malvinas Islands," which took place at the end of July and were reported by international media.
The official report states that "this time it was a new edition of the military exercises called 'Cape Bayonet', which brings together the different British forces that are part of the illegal occupation deployment that the United Kingdom is carrying out in the Malvinas Islands."
The Argentine government urges the United Kingdom to refrain from "adopting unilateral decisions that entail the introduction of changes to the situation while the Islands are undergoing the negotiation process recommended by the United Kingdom."
