Between fishing nets and engines, Monagas kicks off the ninth Coporo Festival

Barrancas del Orinoco promotes tourism and the value of river fishing with sporting and cultural activities and a day of selling protein at affordable prices.

The ninth edition of the Coporo Festival kicked off in Monagas with recreational, sporting, and cultural activities, as well as a large fishing fair at affordable prices in Barrancas del Orinoco, Sotillo municipality.

At the Malecón, attendees enjoyed swimming competitions, hat weaving, local cuisine, and nautical exhibitions, in an agenda designed to highlight the value of the marine species that abounds in the waters of the Orinoco River and consolidate the area as a tourist reference.

During the festivities, Mayor José Gregorio Maldonado explained that locals and visitors participate in net casting, coporo relaxation, craft displays, and gastronomic demonstrations that showcase the deep-rooted cultural traditions of the riverside inhabitants.

Likewise, the distribution at solidarity prices of more than 3.000 kilos of fish protein was carried out through the work of the fishermen grouped in the Council of Fishermen, Fisherwomen and Aquaculture Producers (Conppa).

Municipal spokesperson Aidis Pildain added that more than 15 species of fish were offered, including striped catfish, curbinata, morocoto, lebranche, and coporo, guaranteeing affordable food alternatives for the people on the first day of the festivities.

The local leader added that through a varied recreational and high-powered sporting program, the agenda of this event combines local traditions with navigation of the Orinoco River through exhibitions by the Delta Amacuro Motorboating Association with high-displacement boats, culminating the activities with a great Nautical Rally.
