The Venezuelan Anti-Cancer Society (SAV) mobilized Mobile Clinical Units (UCM) to offer free primary care and cancer screenings to families located in temporary camps.
The initiative reaches the areas affected by the earthquakes of June 24 and offers top-level specialized medicine with the goal of saving lives through timely detection.
The medical deployment took over the facilities of the Andrés Bello High School in Caracas, where the healthcare team provided 45 specialized evaluations to the community housed there.
The day included 23 consultations in the urology area —with physical exams and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests— and 22 in gynecology, which included comprehensive check-ups and cytology sampling to prevent cervical cancer.
The director of the Prevention Clinic – SAV, Dr. Lino Olivieri, said that during the medical outreach events, “we try to take a more proactive approach. What we aim for with the Mobile Clinic Units is to facilitate access to preventive medicine for people by bringing it directly to the communities. By taking these services to areas that don't have access to care, we eliminate barriers and increase the chances of intervention before symptoms appear.”
An inter-institutional commitment to the well-being of families
The continuous operation of these mobile healthcare units—which include the country's only mobile digital mammography unit—demonstrates the tangible impact of joint work between citizens and the private sector.
“The support we receive from individuals and companies translates directly into consultations, preventative studies, and timely outreach programs for the community. These resources allow us to fund field investigations and detect cancer early,” added Dr. Olivieri.
He added that “cancer does not stop despite the tragedy and we do not want to be passive; on the contrary, we are being active in our community activity.”
The joint effort between SAV, private companies, and national and international donors allows for a multiplication of visits by UCMs to the temporary camps, transforming aid into real and direct relief for Venezuelan communities.
