The Minister of Ecosocialism, Josué Lorca, reported this Wednesday that more than 105 scientists from all the universities in the country participate in the work groups with a view to the rescue, conservation and sustainable development of Lake Maracaibo.
This was stated in the framework of the Scientific Technical Meeting for the rescue of Lake Maracaibo, which began this Wednesday and will take place for two days.
Lorca, who highlighted that more than 350 people have registered to participate in the work tables, said that the Vice Presidency of Science and Technology has made a great call for all the scientific sectors of the country.
"We have Venezuela's leading limnologists discussing the potential impacts of the cyanobacteria or blue-green algae that reproduce in the lake," he explained.
He also said that there are technical tables for recycling and cleaning, others for the fishermen's committees, as well as civil society, NGOs, environmental movements and youth.
He explained that in six working groups, government entities, People's Power, scientists and other participants debate about effluent discharges, safety, sanitation, and how the people of Zulia and the people of neighboring regions are involved in the conservation of the lake.
For Lorca, the diversity of sectors present in the activity is a sign of the importance of Lake Maracaibo for the country.
In this regard, he highlighted the presence of the 21 mayors of Zulia state, whose goal is to develop a comprehensive joint plan for the lake. "There are no political biases," Lorca said.
lake effects
For her part, Suher Yabroudi, director of the Water Research Center of the University of Zulia (LUZ), said that this meeting is a possibility in which researchers from different research centers in the country have the opportunity to analyze and raise the causes of these problems that exist in Lake Maracaibo.
Among the different causes, he said that several edges are being handled, ranging from the excessive amount of nutrients that comes mainly from the rivers in the southern area of Zulia state, as well as wastewater discharges without any type of treatment.
For this reason, he indicated that work is being done on the reformulation of the legal framework to regulate the values of organic matter at adequate levels for the characteristics of the lake, as well as proposals for treatment and management of waste in the lake.
This Wednesday, the Sector Vice President of Public Works and Services, Néstor Reverol, and the president of PDVSA, Rafael Tellechea, carried out an overflight over the lake in order to verify the problems that affect it.
