The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, condemned on Tuesday the increase in massacres registered in Colombia this year, which already exceeds 80.
According to the UN News Center, so far in 2020, the office in Colombia has documented 66 massacres, in which 255 people were killed, in 18 departments of the country.
In addition, the Office has received information on the murder of 120 human rights defenders so far this year.
Since the signing of the Peace Agreement in November 2016, the UN Verification Mission in Colombia has also documented 244 killings of ex-combatants from the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP).
"The numbers we are mentioning are those that have been reported, but we fear that they are higher precisely because the COVID-19 pandemic has hampered our efforts to document and verify the killings and massacres," Bachelet's spokeswoman Marta Hurtado told reporters in Geneva.
It should be noted that the most affected areas are Cauca and Antioquia. / AVN
