The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expressed its strong rejection of the false maneuver that the outgoing Chilean government is attempting to mount before the International Criminal Court (ICC), in an attempt to link the murder of a former Venezuelan military officer, identified as Ronald Ojeda, with the judicial body's investigation into alleged crimes against humanity against our country.
In this regard, the Venezuelan government stated in a statement that Chile is trying to "make foreign policy a shoddy spectacle" by supporting its arguments with falsehoods and without any valid legal basis.
The text released by Foreign Minister Yván Gil on his Telegram channel highlights that this maneuver, "in the best Pinochet style," is being promoted as an attempt to bring an isolated case before the CPI through deception. He emphasizes that this is not only legally unsustainable but also demonstrates the "manifest ignorance of the international system and the Rome Statute" of Gabriel Boric's government.
The official document issued by the National Government adds that this position is unacceptable, as it only demonstrates a marked hatred toward Venezuela and a desperation to "please agendas mandated by the U.S. that seek to erode state sovereignty."
"The ICC is not a court that airs the fanciful tales of petty politicians, nor a stage for media manipulations. It is evident that the Chilean authorities have no idea how these mechanisms operate, or worse, that they are simply willing to distort them to align themselves with interests alien to justice," the official text stated.
The Revolutionary Government then reiterated that "Chile, instead of lending itself to shameful maneuvers, should focus on its own serious internal problems, including the systematic violation of the human rights of the Mapuche people and the repression of social protest."
Finally, he emphasized that "Venezuela is a country that can teach lessons about respect for human rights and the dignity of its people. We will not accept attacks from those who have made institutional violence a daily practice and are now trying to divert attention from their own misery with crude political maneuvers."
