The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, said this Saturday that the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, is playing a great role in Mexico, within the framework of the negotiations between the Government and the opposition.
«Jorge Rodríguez is playing a great role and I think that yesterday he excelled, he shone in the firmament and gave a speech that will go down in the history of diplomatic and political speeches for the battle and the truth of Venezuela.»
"What happened yesterday Friday was extraordinary for the peace of the country," said Maduro, commenting that Jorge Rodríguez was invested with plenipotentiary powers. "It was as president of the legitimate National Assembly in office and also as an envoy of the Government and the State. He is invested with powers of representation of the entire State and Venezuelan society."
He said that they worked very patiently to achieve the negotiation. "We have spent months, years sitting down with the opposition to discuss respect for the Constitution, the powers of the State, the electoral schedule, the need to vote, and the lifting of criminal sanctions."
"We did it in Mexico. All the pain was worth it thanks to the brave people who have remained resilient," he said, adding that "what happened in Mexico will have a historic impact in the months to come."
He commented that many opposition representatives expressed their intention to attend this meeting for peace, but the extremists refused and prevented them from going.
“I proposed that all positions be seated in Mexico with the Government, but they did not agree between them. The Venezuelan Unitary Platform, thus calling itself, rejected the participation of these parties and political and parliamentary leaders, ”added the president.
On Friday, Jorge Rodríguez, in a video posted on his Twitter account, stated: “It is very auspicious that with the participation of the Kingdom of Norway, the peace talks between the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela are inaugurated today here in Mexico City. Nicolás Maduro Moros and sectors of the Venezuelan opposition preside ”.
He said that each of the members of the delegation of the Bolivarian Revolution has been certified by the Venezuelan head of state to participate in the negotiation process.
Finally, he thanked the good disposition of the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the solidarity of the people of Mexico, for the hospitality during this political process, and said he is sure that an agreement will be built to strengthen democratic values.
