Culture as a weapon of mass defense

Preserving, rescuing and consolidating our ethical and ideological values is the priority to successfully confront any internal or external threat to our society and its circumstances.

History shows profusely and clearly peoples destroying the culture of others, to subdue and exploit them according to their interests. It is the constant of the regions that have been imposed on others. In our case, yesterday Spain, today the United States.

In this column we have been stubbornly reiterative in promoting the urgent action of the State, to prevent and prevent the accelerated and successful demolition of buildings in urbanizations or areas of cities, erasing the history, memory and reference of our social and urban evolution.

Urban destruction that eliminates our roots and therefore destroys us as a society, as a community, as families, as individuals. What makes us vulnerable to the current siege from the outside.

Neither by this column nor by other means do we reach those who have this responsibility in their hands, who do not fulfill it. We have failed miserably.

When a country (United States) with absolute sincerity announces that in order to subdue another (Iran) it will destroy its urban cultural heritage, the least it forces is "... to put the beards to soak."

We must act immediately on a strategy of valuing our urban heritage reserves, of course in other cultural expressions as well, but since we are architects, it is a field where we can contribute a lot.

Nobody is a prophet in their own land

In this column, in a course at the Bolivarian University taught at the Musarq between 2019-2020 and in other events, we have presented a proposal for the articulation of public spaces in Caracas, prepared in 2017 by a team of young architects in the Presidential Office of Plans and Special Projects.

These are interventions on sidewalks and streets, to form a pedestrian mesh that encourages walking throughout Caracas. Well, as always in other latitudes they are ahead of us. In Valparaíso (Chile) a national contest was called for the same. Here we reviewed it a few weeks ago.

In Hamburg (Germany), the municipality has just launched a plan, Green Network, to link together its green areas, cemeteries, sports centers, orchards, parks and squares, with the goal of walking the entire city in 20 years without cars . In Denmark and other countries there are already other experiences. And what do we expect?
