The municipality of Paz Castillo (Santa Lucía del Tuy), in Miranda, is an agricultural stronghold where corn cultivation is not only a tradition, but also a vital economic engine. With 75% of its territory devoted to agricultural production, corn has positioned itself as one of the favorite crops of local producers. The Inia 7 and Sesentón varieties stand out.
Marvi Calvo, director of the Secretariat of Productive Economy of the jurisdiction of Lucía, stated that the Inia 7 variety has been the most planted variety in this region for years; but in recent years, the Sesentón has gained prominence thanks to its high yield and speed of production.
“This change in farmers’ preferences reflects an adaptation to new market demands and climatic conditions, as well as a commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency,” he said.
Mayor Víctor Julio González has been a fundamental pillar in supporting farmers. Since his administration, he has promoted the annual delivery of corn seeds. “This initiative has allowed the farmers of Paz Castillo to save their own seed, thus establishing a planting system that grows every year. The practice of barter and direct sales between producers has further strengthened the agricultural community, reducing dependence on intermediaries,” he said.
Corn production in Paz Castillo in 2024, despite challenges such as the attack of the corn earworm that caused some losses, reached a total of 2.607 tons. This figure is a testament to the collective effort of farmers and the sector's ability to adapt.

The 869 hectares of corn cultivated, as counted by the Secretariat of Productive Economy of the Mayor's Office of Paz Castillo, demonstrate the commitment and dedication of producers who, in the face of increased production, have managed to see a decrease in corn prices.
The increase in production not only benefits farmers, but also has a significant impact on the local economy, allowing more families to access this staple food at affordable prices. This virtuous cycle of production and consumption is a clear example of how agriculture can be a powerful tool for the economic and social development of communities.
Calvo stressed that corn cultivation in Santa Lucía not only represents an agricultural option, but a way of life and a symbol of resistance and unity among producers.
Production axes
75% of the 214 communities in the Paz Castillo municipality are dedicated to agricultural production. This translates into 160 communities that, through various agricultural activities, contribute to local and regional livelihoods.
Among the communities that stand out for their agricultural vocation are those territorial axes that have specialized in production. “For example, in the Siquire axis, communities such as Los Guayabitos, Tomuso, Cárdenas and El Palmar, are dedicated entirely to agriculture. These communities have developed techniques and practices that allow them to maximize their production and adapt to the conditions of the environment,” says Calvo.
Another significant axis is Las Adjuntas, as well as San Vicente, where communities such as Urapal, Marín and Santa Rita have established themselves as producers. In the heart of the town, localities such as Los Rebalses, Primero de Mayo, Macuto and El Paraíso de Los Gochos, in the Soapire axis, also stand out for their dedication to cultivation.
El Socorro, located in Mariche, is another of the places where crops are planted, reflecting the agricultural diversity of the municipality. “In each of these areas, the production of corn and other crops is a constant, which is celebrated and shared among the inhabitants,” says the engineer.
Sustainable agriculture
Calvo said that in the municipality of Paz Castillo, agricultural producers have maintained a strong connection with their ancestral beliefs, which influence their daily practices. However, over the years, an evolution has been observed in their production systems, driven by the need to adapt to contemporary challenges, such as combating pests, diseases and climate variations.
He said that farmers have begun to implement sustainable agriculture techniques that allow them to improve their corn production without compromising the environment. These practices include crop rotation, the use of pest-resistant varieties, and the integration of organic pest control methods. “These strategies not only seek to increase productivity, but also to preserve the health of the soil and local ecosystems.”

I find errors in this article regarding the calculation issue, saying that 75% of the municipality is planted with corn 🌽 is an exaggeration since the municipality has 408 km2 and here it also says that there are 869 hectares planted, that would be 8,69 square kilometers, in addition to other errors, if I am wrong I appreciate you correcting me, nobody is perfect but I see this exaggerated, greetings.
