In order to consolidate the research and dissemination of local heritage, the Office of the Chronicler of the Sucre Municipality will install the Antonio José de Sucre Insurgent Local History Center.
The chronicler of that community, Víctor Méndez, highlighted Petare's value as a historical epicenter of resistance since colonial times: “We are in an extraordinarily important municipality that has played a leading role from the very beginning of the indigenous resistance, which prevented the direct arrival of the colonialists to the Caracas valley.” This commitment continued during the independence struggles with José Félix Ribas's Petare Battalion and in the Federal War with the contribution of at least ten generals to the Zamora army.
Beyond its military and social significance, the area has been a fundamental artistic beacon for the country, the birthplace of masters like Bárbaro Rivas and a haven for creators such as César Rengifo, Jacobo Borges, and Tito Salas. The chronicler emphasized: “Petare also became a very significant meeting place for the great Latin American artists who were present,” underscoring the urgent need to rescue community memory, traditions, and urban heritage in the face of the city's transformations.
The center will be set up on Wednesday, September 9th, starting at 10:00 am at the Shalom restaurant, located in the famous Z alley in the historic center of Petare.
The event will include the launch of the Institute of Audiovisual Historical Memory, with screenings of two documentaries dedicated to the history of the La Machaca community and local agricultural production. It will also serve as the launch of the book "Petare, Drum and Song," along with the presentation of the preservation plan "Petare, Vulnerable Historical Center," which has forged alliances with more than thirty institutions of higher education and state cultural organizations.
