Sophie Turner's injury halts filming of Lara Croft series

The British actress plays the heroine in the new Prime Video series.

Filming of the new 'Tomb Raider' series has been paused after actress Sophie Turner suffered a serious injury. This was confirmed to the BBC by the showrunners.

As is known, the star of 'Game of Thrones' is in charge of bringing to life in the next adaptation of the famous video game the heroine Lara Croft, a British archaeologist, explorer and adventurer of aristocratic origin who travels the world in search of ancient artifacts.

A spokesperson for Prime Video, the platform that produces the series, confirmed that Turner recently suffered a "minor injury," though they did not confirm whether it occurred on or off set.

Two weeks?

"As a precautionary measure, production has been briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We hope to resume production as soon as possible," they said.

However, the British tabloid The Sun, which was the first to reveal Turner's injury, noted that the problem suffered by the actress aggravated a pre-existing back injury, something that would lead to a production shutdown for at least a month and possibly up to six months.

Even so, according to Page Six, Prime Video is convinced that Turner will return to filming within two weeks.

"Perpetual" problem

The BBC also notes that the 30-year-old star revealed in an interview with SiriusXM that she discovered she had "a perpetual back problem" during the grueling and prolonged training regimen in the months leading up to the start of filming for the show.

In that same interview, he also acknowledged that he had difficulty gaining muscle mass: “It’s much easier to achieve if you’ve ever exercised in your life. It’s something I never had, so it took me months and months to get in good shape. That’s what I learned,” he commented.

Croft has so far been portrayed in film by Angelina Jolie in the movies 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' (2001) and 'Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life' (2003); and Alicia Vikander in the film 'Tomb Raider' (2018), which was not well received.

From Sansa to Lara

Sophie Turner will be the first to embody the heroine on the small screen, in a story produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, star of the series 'Fleabag'.

“These are huge shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander with their powerful performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, I feel very confident,” Turner said when her casting as the new Lara Croft was announced.

Sophie Turner is famous for playing Sansa Stark, the Queen of the North, in HBO's acclaimed epic fantasy series 'Game of Thrones'. She also portrayed the superheroine Jean Grey in the 'X-Men' film saga.

The 'Tomb Raider' series, which should arrive on the platform in 2027, will also feature performances by Sigourney Weaver, star of 'Aliens' and 'Avatar', Jason Isaacs and Celia Imrie, among others.
