Actor Otto Sirgo, one of the icons of Mexican telenovelas, has died.

The Cuban-Mexican actor stood out in melodramas such as 'Rosa salvaje', 'Sortilegio' and 'Lazos de amor'.

Cuban-Mexican actor Otto Sirgo (1946-2026), known for his roles in television productions, especially in telenovelas such as 'Rosa salvaje', 'Sortilegio' and 'Lazos de amor', died at the age of 79, the National Association of Interpreters (ANDI) reported on Tuesday, as reported by EFE.

The Board of Directors and the Oversight Committee of ANDI reported the death of the performer in a message on social media, where they also expressed their condolences, without specifying the cause of death.

"Mexican actor with an extensive career in theater, film and television. He achieved international fame for his participation in the melodramas 'Lazos de amor', 'Niña amada mía' and 'Por un beso'," the publication detailed.

In an artistic family

The National Association of Actors also joined in the farewell, deeply regretting the loss of the actor who had a career spanning more than 50 years.

Sirgo was born on December 19, 1946 in Havana, Cuba, into a family dedicated to the world of acting, as both his father, the Cuban Otto Sirgo (1919-1966), and his mother, the Mexican Magda Haller (1915-1981), were dedicated to show business.

In addition, he was the grandson of the Spanish-Mexican actress Conchita Gentil Arcos (1897-1982), who was a symbol during the Golden Age of national cinema and collaborated on several occasions with Germán Valdés, popularly known as Tin Tan.

'Ties of Love'

Sirgo began to establish himself as an icon of Mexican telenovelas after his time in 'Lazos de amor' (1995-1996), in which he played Eduardo Rivas, the character with whom he accompanied the artist Lucero on stage.

He also played Octavio Uriarte in the telenovela 'Niña amada mía' or 'Rosa Salvaje', which he shared with actress Verónica Castro, although during his career he accumulated more than 50 telenovelas and 30 plays.

In an interview with Televisa last year, Sirgo confessed that he was facing health problems and the emotional turmoil he experienced after the death of his wife, Mexican actress Mareli Morales (1953-2020). EFE
