Medical team released after baby burned in Barinas hospital

Five of those under investigation were ordered to appear in court every 30 days and were prohibited from leaving the country.

This Thursday afternoon, the medical and nursing team from the Dr. Luis Razetti Hospital in Barinas was released. They had been detained following an incident involving a newborn who suffered burns from the explosion of a homemade lamp in the neonatology unit.

The measure benefited the head of the neonatology unit, Dr. Harry Sánchez, along with the rest of the doctors and nursing staff: Yellimar Neira, Nohelia Solórzano, Yismary García and Belmary Ciro.

The precautionary measure was granted after the presentation of guarantors, and they were ordered to appear every 30 days and prohibited from leaving the country, while the judicial process continues.

The defense of health personnel He explained that the Public Prosecutor's Office has 45 days to formalize the concluding act or indictment. Subsequently, the court will have 15 days to set the date for the preliminary hearing, a stage in which the defense attorneys will have 20 days to prepare the corresponding evidence, with a view to requesting the dismissal of the case, a change of measure, or that the court order the case to proceed to trial.

It is worth remembering that during the presentation hearing held last Monday, the court granted full freedom to two of the nurses initially arrested.

The health sector in Barinas expressed its strong rejection of the police procedure, questioning the classification of the incident as a flagrant offense. They explained that the incident involving the lamp occurred on July 31st; however, the arrests by the Barinas Municipal Police were carried out 15 days later, after the boy's father posted a video online.

The medical staff stated that the newborn was born on July 15 with a severe bacterial infection that compromised his immune system and caused multiple complications. They asserted that the patient received appropriate medical treatment and that the family was kept informed of his clinical progress. They also denounced the procedure as violating due process and triggering a contingency plan by temporarily leaving 25 newborns in the hospital without care.

  1. A HANDMADE LAMP…HOW IS THAT…? THIS IS NOW A PROBLEM FOR THE SERVICES AND MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT…THIS WILL LEAD TO LEGAL COMPLAINTS…AND THE 45 NEWBORNS…FOR ASSISTANCE. THAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF LOGISTICS AND PREVENTION, PRIOR TO THE HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT…ALL STAFF WHO SEE AN ANOMALY IN THEIR SERVICES…REPORT IT IS THE ORDER…DAMN IT…

  2. That's very sad, and it's not the first time a case of burns to newborns has occurred. Here in Caracas a few years ago, I don't know if it was in the late nineties, babies died from burns at the Comcepción Palacios Maternity Hospital; I don't remember how many because the incubators were broken.
That's very delicate and very unfortunate, because those babies are in the care of the on-duty staff and they must be very attentive to the smallest detail.
